The Right Stuff (1983)

During the Cold War, the U.S.-led Western powers and the Soviet bloc countries were at odds, leading to a space race. The Right Stuff focuses on the first 15 years of the space program in the United States at the newly commissioned Edwards Air Force Base in California. It starts with wartime ace Chuck Yeager as he makes a historic flight as he breaks the sound barrier in his X-1 rocket-powered jet plane in 1947. With the Soviet Satellite Sputnik launch in 1959, the United States ramped up its efforts by selecting seven pilots for its Mercury Program, its first human spaceflight program.
