Third Man Out (2005)

In the heart of Albany, Donald Strachey stands out as the city's sole openly gay private investigator. His life partner, Tim Callahan, serves as the dedicated aide to Democratic senator, Dianne Glassman. Amidst an ongoing financial strain due to their ambitious home renovation project, Donald hesitantly accepts the case of John Rutka, a controversial figure in the gay community. Rutka, both revered and reviled, is known for his outspoken advocacy, which often involves publicly outing closeted gays via his popular website. His targets are high-profile figures, a tactic he believes propels the gay rights movement. However, this earns him enemies on both sides of the social spectrum - from homophobes to fellow members of the gay community, including Donald and Tim. After surviving a shooting in his home, Rutka hires Donald to uncover the identity of his assailant - a task laden with a sense of urgency as the shooter remains at large, potentially ready to strike again. With Rutka's boyfriend, Eddie Santon, entangled in the fray, Donald begins to investigate three prominent figures flagged by Rutka's website. As he delves deeper, attempts on Rutka's life escalate, and the danger begins to creep dangerously close to Donald and Tim.
