Plot

In the lush vineyards of Provence, two fugitive Italian brothers, Giancarlo and Ernesto Barandero, find themselves hidden amidst a flurry of grape pickers. They are on the run from Italian law enforcement, a consequence of Ernesto's fiery temperament and a fatal altercation in Genoa. Giancarlo, the older and more pragmatic of the duo, is the protective force against Ernesto's sensitive idealism and volatile outbursts. Their illegal crossing into France becomes a desperate quest for anonymity and survival as the threat of their past looms heavy. In this pastoral setting, they find employment under the gruff vineyard owner, Louis Morel, despite the absence of official work cards. Louis runs the vineyard with a fierce dedication, often neglecting his compassionate wife Léone and her younger sister Lucienne. Also in this close-knit community are the loyal Eduardo Uribon, leading the regular Spanish pickers, and Etienne, a hired hand and Lucienne's unofficial suitor. As the grape-picking season unravels, forbidden passions bloom amidst the vineyard's rows. Giancarlo finds himself drawn to the delicate Lucienne, complicating the already precarious situation with Etienne. Meanwhile, Ernesto, the tempered idealist, falls for the neglected Léone. Her caring demeanor becomes a balm for his troubled soul, kindling a burning desire that threatens to engulf them all. But as the brothers navigate these intricate webs of love and loyalty, the unrelenting pursuit of the Italian police inches ever closer. The ensuing drama may not only threaten their newfound relationships with Léone and Lucienne but could potentially shatter the fragile sanctuary they have discovered amidst the vineyard's verdant allure. The Vintage (1957) is a tale of love, desperation, and survival that unfolds under the Provencal sun, proving that even in the most beautiful of landscapes, trouble is never too far behind.
