Plot

Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle and his partner, Buddy Russo, work the tough streets of New York City as narcotics detectives. The two detectives seemingly only arrest small-time dealers and players. While out drinking at a favorite bar one evening, Doyle becomes suspicious about some people he sees joining some drug figures at a table. Doyle and Russo investigate things further and slowly uncover information about a potentially massive drug shipment coming into New York. Two mysterious Frenchmen, drug kingpin Alain Charnier and his "muscle," Pierre. Doyle starts to get too close to Charnier, so he dispatches Pierre to assassinate the detective.
