Plot

Once an ambitious Boston attorney, Frank Galvin's future now seems eclipsed by a single act of professional integrity that resulted in his dismissal from a prestigious law firm, near disbarment, and the departure of his wife. Now, he navigates the labyrinth of life as a hard-drinking ambulance chaser, subsisting off the meager earnings from exploiting the frail and defenseless while stretching the truth to the brink of morality. His former partner and only ally in the legal world, Mickey Morrissey, hands him a lifeline in the form of a case that could potentially resurrect his crumbling career. The case revolves around Deborah Ann Kaye, a victim of medical negligence at the hands of the renowned St. Catherine Labouré Hospital and its esteemed doctors, Towler and Marks. The routine childbirth she was admitted for took a perilous turn, leaving her in a life-long vegetative state, the result of an incorrect anesthetic application. Despite the wall of silence surrounding the incident, with all but one of the operating room's occupants swearing by the doctors' innocence, Frank senses an opportunity for redemption. Spurred by the sight of Kaye's condition, he declines the hefty out-of-court settlement proposed by the Archdiocese of Boston, opting instead to bring the case to trial. In this audacious move, he aims to expose the hospital's negligence, hoping to secure justice for his clients and restore his tarnished reputation. As Frank embarks on this uphill battle, he finds an unexpected companion in Laura Fischer, drawn to his newfound determination. However, the road to redemption is far from easy. The Archdiocese has secured the services of the formidable Ed Concannon, a high-priced lawyer with an army of associates, ready to protect their client at all costs. To further complicate matters, the presiding judge, Judge Hoyle, harbors a clear bias against Frank's decision to go to court. Despite these daunting obstacles, Frank Galvin, the lawyer once reduced to ambulance chasing, is determined to fight. As he stumbles through the legal minefield, he becomes increasingly convinced that this case could be his shot at redemption: a chance to punish the guilty, secure a just settlement for his clients, and reclaim his standing in the legal world.
