The Road Not Taken (2018)

In the secluded expanse of China's Gobi Desert, Yong (Wang Xuebing), a disillusioned ostrich farmer, clings to a crumbling life and a dilapidated farm, his last shot at redemption. His goal? To mend his fragmented existence and reclaim the affections of his estranged wife. However, his life takes an unexpected turn when the stern Mr. Wu (Wang Xufeng), a debt collector, arrives at his doorstep. Unable to repay the debt, Yong finds himself entrusted with an unanticipated responsibility - a solitary young boy (Zhu Gengyou), left behind by Wu as a unique form of payment. Haunted by suspicions of his ex-wife remarrying and faced with the young boy's sudden appearance, Yong embarks on a quest across the vast, sun-baked stretches of the Gobi. A journey, not only to find his wife but also to reconnect with his own lost sense of self. Along the way, he encounters the melancholic trucker, Mei (Ma YiLi), and their lonely paths intertwine, forming an unexpected makeshift family. As they traverse this desolate landscape, their journey evolves into a complex tapestry of relationships, with Yong's bond with the boy continually tested and redefined. Meanwhile, the specter of the local mob, to whom Yong owes his debt, looms ominously, ensnaring him in a web of deceit and danger as he becomes embroiled in their nefarious kidnapping scheme. The Road Not Taken is a poignant tale of redemption, relationships, and resilience. Each character's path, marked by random encounters and challenging trials, ultimately leads them to a point of no return.
