The Reivers (1969)

“Boon is a reiver (that's a cheat, a liar, a brawler and womaniser) and he had just four days to teach young Lucius the facts of life (like cheating, lying, brawling and womanizing).”

Plot

In the dawn of the 20th century, nestled in the heart of rural Mississippi, an aged man embarks on a nostalgic journey back to his youth. Six decades prior, at the tender age of 11, Lucius's life takes an unanticipated turn when his grandfather brings home the first automobile in their town - a radiant yellow Winton Flyer. In his grandfather's absence, the plantation handyman, Boon Hogganbeck, with a devilish twinkle in his eye, hatches a plan to "borrow" the car, and what better accomplice to have than the young, curious Lucius? Unbeknownst to them, they are not alone. Stowed away in the car, they find Ned, a mulatto and Lucius's assumed cousin. The trio set off on an impromptu road trip, leaving the familiarity of Mississippi behind and heading towards the bustling city of Memphis. Memphis, a city teeming with life and secrets, holds Boon's sweetheart in its clutches, working in a house of ill repute. It's here that Ned trades their prized automobile for a racehorse, a decision that sets off a series of unforgettable adventures. As the city reveals its underbelly to the young boy, Lucius finds himself on the precipice of adulthood, wrestling with the harsh realities of racism, vice, and the fading innocence of his childhood. Amidst the chaos, he also discovers the potential for honor, courage, and redemption. This journey becomes a rite of passage, a transformative experience that raises the question: Can there be salvation for the mischievous and wayward, the reivers, rascals, and rapscallions of the world? The Reivers is a poignant tale of coming-of-age, a vivid snapshot of a time long past, and a testament to the power of friendship, courage, and redemption.
