The white McAllan family and the black Jackson family both subsist on the backbreaking labor of tending the same farmland, but racism and generations of resentment keep them apart from one another. But when World War II ends, the unlikely friendship that develops between two men from opposite families could change things for the better. The shared experience of the war bonded together Jamie McAllan and Ronsel Jackson in ways that the rest of the family can't understand. And while both sides will fight against it, they might hopefully find a sense of solidarity in the shared struggles both families experience.
