Returning from the charred battlefields of World War I, Larry Darrell finds himself a stranger in his own American homeland, his soul bearing the scars of his experiences. As he grapples with this profound transformation, his bewildered but patient fiancée, Isabel, watches their wedding plans fade into the future. Drawn by an indefinable yearning, Larry ventures to the pulsing heart of Paris, where he discovers a profound affinity for a more humble, unadorned existence.
