Plot

In the year 1767, British Princess Caroline faces a daunting future as she is pledged in matrimony to King Christian VII of Denmark, a ruler known for his capricious insanity. Her existence in the stifling Danish court morphs into a solitary torment, trapped in a marriage with a mad king. However, a glimmer of hope emerges in the form of the German Dr. Johann Struensee, a man of quiet ideals who embodies the Enlightenment period. As the king's newfound confidant, Struensee wields an unusual influence over Christian VII, allowing him to subtly implement a wave of enlightened reforms throughout Denmark. Amidst this political transformation, a clandestine love blossoms between Caroline and the visionary doctor. But their hidden affair becomes a dangerous misstep, providing ammunition to their conservative foes in a bitter struggle for power. Their illicit romance becomes a pawn in a larger game, and the unfolding drama threatens to consume more than just their fated love. Set in a time of political upheaval and personal tragedy, A Royal Affair paints a vivid picture of love, betrayal, and sacrifice in the face of power and tradition.
