In the heart of Copenhagen, an old apartment harbors a chilling secret. Behind a cleverly crafted false wall, two workmen stumble upon a macabre tableau: three mummified corpses seated around a dining table, an empty fourth chair silently posing a haunting question. This unnerving discovery swiftly lands on the desk of the gruff Detective Superintendent Carl Mørck and his invaluable assistant, Assad. They are plunged into a cryptic mystery that reaches back into Denmark's murky past and into the present's dark underbelly, a labyrinthine puzzle they must unravel before time runs out.
Their investigation leads them to the notorious institution for 'wayward' girls on the island of Sprogø, infamous for its grim history of extreme neglect and forced sterilization. The horrors of Sprogø, a closed chapter in Danish history, resurface with allegations that these inhuman experiments are not just remnants of the past, but continue to stain the present day.
