Plot

In the aftermath of a botched mission, the gruff, stubborn Commissioner Carl Mørck finds his career derailed, exiled to the dusty, forgotten corners of a special department in the heart of the police force. Alongside his newly appointed assistant, Assad, he's tasked with wrapping up cold cases, unresolved mysteries that time and bureaucracy have left behind. The one rule: he must not get personally entangled. Resilience and curiosity, however, define Carl's character, and he soon finds himself drawn into a haunting case of a vanished lady politician, Merete Lynggaard. Her sudden disappearance five years prior, aboard a ferry in the unsettling presence of her mentally handicapped brother, had sparked a lackluster police investigation, which was quickly silenced by an official suicide verdict. Unconvinced and undeterred, Carl and Assad dive headfirst into the mystery, challenging the established narrative and the officials who'd rather leave the past undisturbed. As they delve deeper, they find themselves in the chilling underbelly of Scandinavia, a world far removed from its polished exterior. A labyrinth of malice, abuse, and hidden secrets awaits them, challenging their resolve at every turn. Slowly, the gruff Commissioner unravels a horrifying truth, one that those in power tried to bury. The Keeper of Lost Causes is a compelling journey into the heart of darkness that lurks beneath the surface, where the forgotten are remembered, and lost causes find their champions.
