In the haunting hours following the tragic assassination of President Abraham Lincoln on April 9, 1965, an unsuspecting country doctor, Dr. Samuel Alexander Mudd, finds himself embroiled in a sinister plot of historical proportions. The night unfurls a wounded man on his doorstep, a stranger seeking immediate medical attention. Oblivious to the seismic shockwaves his patient's actions have sent across the nation, Dr. Mudd provides treatment to the man who, unbeknownst to him, is the notorious assassin, John Wilkes Booth. The chilling dawn ushers in an army posse, hot on the trail of the president's killer. Their search leads them to Dr. Mudd's home, where they uncover irrefutable evidence of Booth's fleeting visit. Despite his innocence and ignorance of the macabre deed committed by his patient, Dr. Mudd is apprehended, accused of complicity in the high-profile murder. The courtroom drama unfolds with Dr. Mudd positioned as the scapegoat. Convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, he is sent to the infamous Dry Tortugas prison, a desolate fortress in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, renowned for its rampant pestilence and hopeless atmosphere. Yet, when the prison is besieged by a deadly yellow fever epidemic, cutting it off from the rest of the world, Dr. Mudd's skills and humanity come to the fore. Despite his own despair, he battles the disease, offering aid to the suffering guards and fellow prisoners, transforming the bleak prison into a beacon of hope in the midst of the unforgiving ocean.
