The Peacekeeper (1997)

Major Frank Cross, an audacious United States Air Force Officer, finds himself in disfavor with the Pentagon. Known for his unconventional acts of bravery, he's hailed as a hero by the media for an unsanctioned humanitarian flight, delivering essential supplies to the starving Kurds. The politically savvy President, keen on exploiting Cross's media appeal, assigns him a seemingly straightforward task to protect the President's personal "black bag". The bag, a technological marvel, houses the all-important "go codes" and communication system capable of initiating America's nuclear ICBM arsenal during a national crisis. However, Cross's first day on the duty spirals into chaos when a group of ruthless mercenaries snatch the briefcase and leave him plummeting from a tenth-floor balcony. Surviving against all odds, Cross embarks on a high-speed pursuit through the labyrinthine streets of Chicago, escalating into a rooftop chase that ends with a blazing taxi plunge. Unbeknownst to the mercenaries, Cross cleverly stows away on their escape helicopter, infiltrating their ranks as they head towards the United States Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Facility K-7. The mercenaries, led by the elusive ex-Marine Colonel Douglas Murphy, seize control of the facility, executing a horrifying display of power by reducing the iconic Mount Rushmore to rubble using a Peacekeeper nuclear missile. Their chilling demand to the President: commit suicide on live television or face the obliteration of Washington D.C. by the two remaining nuclear missiles. Now, it's up to the resourceful Major Cross and Lieutenant Colonel Bernard Northrop, the only other survivor from the Missile Facility, to avert the impending catastrophe. They're thrust into a deadly race against time, facing insurmountable odds, with the fate of the President and millions of innocent lives hanging in the balance. As the countdown begins, the pulse-pounding suspense intensifies, leading to a climactic confrontation with The PEACEKEEPER.
