In the midst of a chaotic traffic jam under the sizzling Californian sun, a spectacle unfolds as the notorious Smiler Grogan, fresh from a lengthy prison stint, barrels along at a reckless pace. His desperate journey ends abruptly as his vehicle plunges over a cliff, witnessed by the stunned occupants of four nearby cars. United by curiosity and the scent of opportunity, they descend to offer help, only to be greeted by Grogan's dying revelation. There lies a fortune of $350,000, the spoils of a job carried out 15 years prior, cunningly hidden under the cryptic sign of the Big W in a nondescript park. As the last breath escapes Grogan, he leaves behind a maddening treasure hunt that promises to change lives, if only the money can be found. The unlikely band of witnesses, stirred by the prospect of easy wealth, find their civility slipping away in the face of potential riches. As they fail to reach a consensus on splitting the money, the situation rapidly descends into a wild, frenzied chase across the state. With every mile covered, the tension escalates, and the race for the hidden treasure transforms into a mad, mad, mad, mad world.
