The Loved One (1965)

Fresh off the boat from England and brimming with naivety, Dennis Barlow finds himself adrift in Hollywood's sea of glitz and glamour. His journey takes an unexpected turn when he is thrust into the role of funeral arranger for his recently deceased uncle at Whispering Glades, a highly-structured and alarmingly profitable funeral parlour. Caught in the web of the formidable Whispering Glades is the captivating cosmetician, Aimee Thanatogenos, who quickly ensnares Barlow's heart. However, his romantic aspirations are hindered by a trio of obstacles. First, the iron-clad regulations of the parlour's proprietor, the stern Blessed Reverend Glenworthy; second, the cut-throat competition from the enigmatic embalmer, Mr. Joyboy; and finally, the ignominy of his new employment at The Happy Hunting Ground, a melancholic memorial home for pets. Director Tony Richardson's deft touch brings Evelyn Waugh's darkly humorous exploration of America's morbid obsession with death to life.
