Plot

In the breathtaking world of mountaineering, the bond between Hong-gil and Mu-taek is forged amidst the icy winds of Kanchenjunga. Their camaraderie is as rugged as the terrain they conquer, their friendship, an echo of their shared adrenaline. Their triumphant ascent of the Himalayas crowns their professional careers, marking them as the 14th team to conquer the formidable range. Yet, the victory extracts a heavy toll. Both climbers bear the physical scars of their journey, forcing Hong-gil into an unwanted retirement. Over time, Hong-gil reinvents himself as a distinguished lecturer, while Mu-taek, driven by their shared passion, accepts an assignment to scale Everest - the pinnacle of their shared dream. When the news of Mu-taek's disappearance reaches Hong-gil, it strikes him like an avalanche. He is engulfed by guilt, blaming himself for encouraging Mu-taek's daring endeavor. Haunted by the image of Mu-taek's frozen remains, forever trapped on the icy slopes of Everest, Hong-gil is driven to action. He resolves to assemble a rescue team to retrieve his friend's body. Unfazed by ominous warnings, his own lingering injuries, and the tempestuous wrath of the mountains, Hong-gil embarks on the most challenging expedition of his life. "The Himalayas" (2015) is a deeply moving tale, rooted in true events, that charts the perilous journey of renowned mountaineer UM Hong-gil as he faces the haunting echo of a lost friend and the treacherous beauty of Everest in his most personal mission yet.
