The Guillotines (2012)

In the menacing shadows of the Manchurian-ruled Qing Dynasty, the enigmatic Emperor Yong Zheng creates a clandestine assassination squad known as the Guillotines. These silent, lethal hunters are his trusted instruments of death, eliminating opposition with chilling efficiency. The Guillotines bask in the Emperor's favor, their power unchallenged, until a seismic shift in the throne occurs. Emperor Qian Long ascends, bringing with him a wave of Western ideas and technology that threaten to make the Guillotines obsolete. Under Qian Long's regime, the Guillotines are relegated to the shadows, expendable relics of a bygone era. Yet, they remain the Emperor's ruthless hand, perpetuating a reign of terror and oppression against the conquered Han Chinese. The Guillotines, led by the masterful warrior Leng, are an indomitable quintet: Mu, San, Tai, Hutu, and Buka. Their loyalty to the Qing Court is unwavering, their success rate in 348 missions unblemished. But hubris seeps into their ranks, their arrogance a stepping stone to complacency. A formidable challenge emerges in the form of Wolf and his Shepherd gang. The Guillotines corner Wolf, but a sudden twist in orders upends their mission. Their commander, harboring a treacherous power play, insists on capturing Wolf alive. This momentary hesitation becomes their downfall as Wolf's gang ambushes them, spiriting away both Wolf and the captive Mu. As reports of Wolf's escape to the frontier reach the Emperor, he dispatches his most trusted agent, Du, on a dual mission. Du is to hunt down Wolf, and more ominously, usher in the end of the Guillotines' era, replacing their cold steel with the searing power of firearms. One misstep, one wrong decision, and the hunters become the hunted. With extinction looming over them, Leng and his Guillotines are caught in a deadly vortex of deception and betrayal. They must outmaneuver and outfight enemies on both fronts, testing their loyalties, their courage, and their resolve. The Guillotines, once the Empire's favored assassins, now stand on the precipice of oblivion, their fate hanging as precariously as the blade that defines them.
