Plot

In the aftermath of World War II, Peter, a displaced person hovering on the brink of deportation, makes a daring leap from his ship in New York's bustling harbor. His singular purpose: to track down Tom, an ex-G.I he once assisted during the grimness of war. Tom is the only one who can vouch for Peter's legitimacy, proving his right to step onto the hallowed soil of the United States. As the clock ticks, a frenzied 24-hour pursuit begins. If Peter fails to find Tom and substantiate his claim, he risks not only becoming a fugitive but also loses his shot at U.S. citizenship forever. His desperate search thrusts him into the life of Maggie, a luckless factory worker whose spirits he revives with his unwavering faith. His journey also takes him to a jazz club, alive with the pulsating rhythms of Shorty Rogers and his band, and the smooth notes of trombonist Jack Teagarden. A brief, heartwarming encounter with Tanya Zakoyla, a kind-hearted burlesque dancer, leads him to a comforting meal and rest at her mother's humble abode. As dawn breaks, Peter finds himself in the towering "glass wall" of the United Nations Building, a beacon of hope for all displaced persons. It's here he must plead his case, not just for himself but for all those lost in the shadows of displacement, yearning for a place to call home.
