In the 1930s, an awkward young woman is working as the companion to an elderly woman traveling through Europe. On the French Riviera, she meets and falls in love with the wealthy and glamorous Max de Winter, and they marry. However, on arrival at his ancestral home, Manderley, she is intimidated by the housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers, and the legacy of Rebecca, Max's first wife. She becomes increasingly convinced that she can never measure up to Rebecca and that Max is still in love with his dead wife. However, a shocking discovery changes everything.
