Plot

In the aftermath of a horrific Japanese internment camp, hardened survivor Teoh Yun Ling embarks on a personal crusade, aiding Malaysian authorities in bringing Japanese war criminals to justice. Her heart hardens against the Japanese, yet a need to honor her deceased younger sister's memory compels her on a journey to the highlands, to the doorstep of the esteemed gardener, Nakamura Aritomo. Aritomo, refusing to lend his services to Yun Ling, instead offers her an apprenticeship, a chance to craft her own tribute in the form of a garden. Amid the tranquility of the tea room, Yun Ling immerses herself in the intricate art of garden design, her work blossoming within the mystical confines of The Garden of Evening Mists. However, beyond the serene Malaysian jungle, a storm of political unrest brews. The struggle for independence rages on as Malay nationalists defiantly rise against their British rulers. Meanwhile, communist guerillas ruthlessly seize control of the regions, their reign of terror casting a dark shadow over farmers, miners, and their families. The Garden of Evening Mists thus stands as a haven amidst turmoil, a testament to the enduring human spirit amidst the harsh realities of war and political upheaval.
