The Flat (2011)

In the wake of the passing of Gerda Tuchler, a German-Jew who clung to her German heritage despite living in a Tel Aviv flat since her exile from Germany in the 1930s, her family congregates to sift through the remnants of her life. Among them is her grandson, Arnon Goldfinger, who decides to chronicle the process of cleaning out Gerda's apartment on film. As Gerda's daughter Hannah takes the lead, they believe that, aside from the portraits of Gerda and her late husband, Kurt Tuchler, there would be little worth salvaging. What they uncover, however, is far more than they bargained for: a cache of records revealing an unlikely and long-standing friendship between Gerda and Kurt and the high-ranking Nazi official, Leopold von Mildenstein, and his wife— a friendship forged in Germany prior to the Jews' extradition, and endured astonishingly, even post-war. The discovery leaves Arnon reeling, propelling him on a global quest for answers, a quest that forces him to step from behind the lens and into the narrative. As Arnon delves deeper into the past, he grapples with Hannah's generation's inclination to bury the horrors of war and persecution, and struggles to understand the complex relationship that seemed to blur the lines between family, sentiment, and history.
