Plot

In the early 90s, nestled between stints on General Hospital and local TV commercials, Ryan Sexton found himself chronicling the provocative existence and controversial craft of El Duce, the iconic lead singer of the infamous shock rock band, The Mentors. With their signature black executioner hoods and lyrics that sparked denouncements on the Senate floor, The Mentors fleetingly blazed across the national consciousness. A quarter of a century later, filmmakers David Lawrence and Rodney Ascher delve into the labyrinth of long-forgotten VHS footage, embarking on a quest to decipher the enigma of El Duce. With a keen eye, they seek to unravel the extent of his unsettling persona's authenticity and to discern what a performance anchored in a caricatured display of violent misogyny reveals about the societal undercurrents of their era. "The El Duce Tapes" offers a stirring exploration of the man behind the mask, inviting viewers on a journey through the shadowy corridors of shock rock history.
