Plot

In the unassuming corners of China, tucked away from the bustle of the world, dwells Ezekial Cobb, a product of Christian missionary parents. Having spent two decades in this peaceful isolation since his youth, Ezekial has cultivated a trusting and naive spirit, nurtured by the teachings of Chinese poet and philosopher Ling Po. When his parents implore him to return to his birthplace of Stockport, California in search of a wife, the sheltered man finds himself thrust into the vibrant chaos of the city. In Stockport, the unworldly Ezekial finds himself ensnared in a series of unexpected misadventures. The cunning Jake Mayo, seeing an opportunity in Ezekial's innocence, manipulates him into becoming a puppet for the Good Government League. This seemingly virtuous league is nothing more than a facade for the corroded political machine currently in power, seeking to present a sham of democratic election by making Ezekial their mayoral candidate. Though Ezekial accepts this nomination, believing he stands no chance of winning, his true aim remains to find his future wife and return to the tranquility of China. However, as the depth of Stockport's political corruption unveils itself, the man of integrity finds his goals shifting. Despite the league's assumption that Ezekial is a pushover, he begins to envision a reformation of Stockport's politics. This task, however, poses a significant challenge against the formidable forces fronting the league. Through these trials, Ezekial finds an unlikely ally in the streetwise Pet Pratt, a fellow resident at his boarding house. "The Cat's Paw" is a tale of a naive man navigating the murky waters of political corruption, while grappling with the unfamiliarity of a world far removed from his serene upbringing. His journey is one of self-discovery, resilience, and unexpected heroism, as he transforms from a pawn in a political game to a beacon of hope for change.
