Plot
Sequestered within the haunted walls of "Mark's Priory," the ancestral abode of the Lebanons, Ilsa Crane, a secretary and niece to Lady Lebanon, is ensnared by terror. This dread is magnified by the peculiar conduct of two ominous butlers, Gilder and Brooks. Her sole solace is the comforting presence of the youthful Lord William "Willie" Lebanon.
Enter Richard Ferraby, a budding architect from London, summoned to explore the age-old mansion for prospective renovations. Sparks fly between him and the besieged Isla, resulting in immediate mutual attraction. Meanwhile, Lady Lebanon insists on a union between her son and Isla, to preserve the family lineage. Lord Willie, however, firmly resists the proposed matrimonial arrangement.
In the midst of this turmoil, the family doctor, Dr. Amersham, makes an appearance, carrying a shroud of mystery around him. The enigmatic chauffeur, Studd, implies a dark past shared with Amersham in India, hinting at the doctor's disgraceful dismissal from the Indian Army. When Isla and Richard stumble upon the lifeless body of the chauffeur, suspicion gravitates towards Tilling, the gamekeeper, whose wife shared a suspiciously close bond with the deceased.
However, Chief Inspector Tanner and Deputy Sergeant Totty of Scotland Yard unveil evidence implicating Dr. Aversham as the murderer, corroborated by Lord Willie's chilling account of Aversham's past crime in India involving a strangled girl and a red scarf. Just as the lawmen appear to be closing the case, an alarming telegram arrives from "Mark's Priory"—Dr. Aversham, too, has fallen victim to the red scarf strangler. The investigators must now return to their drawing board, as the house of terror continues to harbor its deadly secret.
