In the shadowy corners of Rome, Sam Dalmas, a seasoned American writer, finds himself ensnared in a chilling game of cat and mouse. He unwittingly becomes an eyewitness to an attempted murder of Monica Ranieri, the wife of an esteemed art gallery owner, by a malevolent figure concealed in a raincoat and black leather gloves. Trapped between double glass doors, Sam is rendered powerless to intervene, his cries muffled by the barrier between him and the unfolding horror. Monica survives the ordeal, her name added to the list of victims claimed by a notorious serial killer who, until now, has left no survivors. The police, led by the relentless Inspector Morosini, are left grappling with the enigma of the case. Seeing their efforts in vain, Sam, compelled by his writer's curiosity, decides to dive into the murky waters of the investigation himself. He postpones his return to America, choosing instead to remain in Rome with his girlfriend Julia, aiding the police with their inquiries. As Sam delves deeper into the mystery, he unearths a myriad of clues, all pointing towards one shadowy suspect. However, the lines between fact and fiction blur, leaving Sam questioning whether he truly knows who he's hunting. Meanwhile, the phantom killer begins to terrorize Sam and Julia, threatening them through cryptic phone calls that leave the police baffled by an eerie noise recorded in the background. The sense of danger heightens as the killer begins to stalk his new targets. The tension mounts as Sam and Julia find themselves ensnared in the killer's web, their lives hanging in the balance.
