In a whirlwind of fate, the wandering grifter Benny finds himself expelled from a train following a card-cheating incident, landing squarely in the world of Tanya - a beautiful and resilient barmaid. Tanya's life revolves around her husband, a former athlete crippled by an accident, with their hopes pinned on an impending insurance settlement to ease their financial struggles. Yet, when the long-awaited windfall arrives, her husband, swayed by a surge of sanctimonious beliefs, adamantly refuses to part with the money, deeming it the catalyst of all evil. Caught in this predicament, Tanya seeks the cunning assistance of Benny to hatch a plot to secure her just portion of the settlement. The unlikely duo discover a perfect opportunity in a local Catholic mission desperate for funds for its renovation. Benny, with his quick wit and sleight of hand, plans to engineer a 'miracle' that would persuade Tanya's devout husband, Henry, to donate the money.
