Plot

Embark on a poignant voyage through time, spanning four decades from 1963 to 2003, across the diverse landscapes of Italy and beyond. "The Best of Youth" charts the lives of two Rome-based brothers, Nicola and Matteo Carati, who are as different as night and day, yet bound by profound love and shared experiences. Their journey begins with an attempt to liberate Giorgia, a young girl trapped within the cold confines of a mental institution. This endeavour, while unsuccessful, sets the brothers on divergent paths - Nicola towards psychiatry, driven by a deep-seated desire to heal, and Matteo to the police force, his rebellious spirit finding purpose in law enforcement. As the narrative wends its way from Rome to the flood-ravaged Florence, and from the student protests in Turin to the Mafia-infested Palermo, the brothers' lives intertwine with remarkable characters. Nicola encounters Giulia, a gifted musician with a dangerous affinity for the Red Brigade, a relationship that blossoms and wilts in the shadow of political strife. Matteo, on the other hand, stumbles upon Mirella, an optimistic photographer whose path he crosses again in Rome, sparking a connection that transcends time and turmoil. "The Best of Youth" is a rich tapestry of love, family, friendship, and politics, woven with threads of mental illness and tragedy. It poignantly explores the potential for forgiveness, healing, and the enduring strength of the human spirit amidst adversity. As the brothers navigate the turbulent waters of terrorism and Tangentopoli, they, along with the cast of characters that orbit their world, leave indelible imprints on the canvas of time, encapsulating the essence of an era.
