Plot

In the vibrant heart of Manhattan, Radcliffe graduate Caroline Bender plunges into the world of work for the first time as a secretary at Fabian Publishing, a realm promising "the best of everything". As she navigates the bustling secretarial pool, Caroline comes to realize her experiences mirror those of her colleagues; each woman is either waiting to marry their present or future lover or chasing their dream profession. Among these women are the aspiring actress Gregg Adams and the innocently inexperienced April Morrison, who become Caroline's roommates in this exciting new chapter. Caroline's role as a secretary to the editors proves to be a complex one, demanding an understanding of every editor's unique quirks and needs. This eclectic array includes the fiercely demanding Amanda Farrow, whose tough exterior conceals a profound loneliness; Fred Shalimar, an ageing Lothario; and Mike Rice, a compassionate man whose closest companion is a bottle of liquor. As each woman - Caroline, Gregg, and April - ventures down the path to happiness, they find it fraught with unexpected challenges and detours. Meanwhile, Amanda Farrow, the sharp-tongued and hardened editor at the publishing house, is embroiled in a disheartening affair with a married man. Her bitterness seeps into her interactions with the girls under her command, including Gregg, who is romantically involved with Broadway stage director David Savage, and Caroline, who, after being spurned by her boyfriend, finds solace in the company of Mike Rice. April, the young typist, succumbs to the charms of the wealthy playboy Dexter Key, only to find herself pregnant and cruelly abandoned. When a personal incident causes Caroline to rethink her plans, she begins to aspire to join the ranks of the editors. Both Amanda and Mike hope that Caroline doesn't realise this dream, each for their own hidden reasons. The Best of Everything offers an insightful exploration of ambition, love, and the struggles faced by these women in their pursuit of happiness amidst the dazzling backdrop of 1950s Manhattan.
