Plot

In the vibrant heart of New York City, Stevenson Lowe (James Spader) - a bachelor with a fear of commitment, and an executive in a publishing house that has been a family heirloom for generations - makes a bold decision. He purchases a splendidly antiquated townhouse, intending to inhabit it alone, thereby dashing the hopes of his long-time girlfriend, Julia (Polly Walker), who had envisioned sharing a home together. However, the grand townhouse has tales to tell, housing the amiable spirits of Max Gale (Sir Michael Caine) and Lily Marlowe (Dame Maggie Smith), two celebrated theatre stars of the 1920s. This spectral couple, eternally bound by marriage, spend their afterlife locked in a perpetual cycle of bickering and reconciliation. As the ghosts persist in their endless quarrel, Stevenson's life begins to unravel. The publishing house, once a bastion of literary merit, descends into the realm of commerciality, threatening to publish shallow books. His former lover, Michelle Tippet (Marcia Gay Harden), re-emerges with a romantic agenda, while Julia, disillusioned and heartbroken, finds solace in the arms of the charming Senator Will Dodge (Sam Shepard) in Washington, D.C. In the midst of this chaos, the ghosts of the old theatre stars offer Stevenson an unexpected education in love and commitment. As he negotiates the turbulence of his life, he realizes the depth of his love for Julia. Now, he must navigate through the sea of change to win back the woman he has unwittingly let go. Will he find a way to restore his love, or will he remain a permanent bachelor in his haunted townhouse?
