In the heart of Norway, a simple ash lad named Espen and his family find themselves swept up in a whirlwind royal invitation from prince Raul to attend a grand ball, hoping to win the hand of King Erik's darling daughter, Kristin. However, their joy turns to dread as Espen's half-brothers, Pera and Pål, are thrown into the grim dungeon, wrongfully accused of an unforgivable act - poisoning the king. Driven by a desperate desire to save his brothers and expose the real villain, Espen embarks on a perilous journey with Princess Kristin. Their destination is the fabled palace of Soria Moria, hidden deep beneath the waters of a bewitched Norwegian lake, where the elusive water of life - the only cure for the poisoned king - is fiercely guarded by monstrous creatures of the lake's grim king. Their path is fraught with peril as they cross swords with a motley crew of robbers and fortune hunters. These encounters, while troublesome, lead them to valuable clues from the only man ever to escape the grasp of the lake.
