Plot

Set against the tumultuous backdrop of 1968's "Prague Spring," That Trip We Took with Dad chronicles the poignant journey of a Romanian-German family from the rustic city of Arad. This emotionally charged narrative hinges on two unequal brothers, Mihai and Emil, and their ailing father, bound by a common destination - the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Mihai, the older brother, yearns for his father's surgical intervention in the GDR, hoping it will mend the frayed edges of their familial harmony. The younger Emil, a silent observer, is equally entangled in their shared fate. But as they traverse the East German border, their path back home is abruptly severed by the ominous presence of Soviet tanks rolling into the CSSR. In an unexpected twist of fate, the family finds themselves adrift in West Germany, their plans drastically altered by the political chaos swirling around them. The brothers and their father grapple with a universal conundrum, their bonds tested and their resolve challenged: How much sacrifice is one willing to bear for the sake of family reunion? That Trip We Took with Dad is a riveting tale of love, sacrifice, and resilience, an intimate portrayal of a family navigating the labyrinth of geopolitical turmoil, each detour compelling them to redefine their notions of home and belonging.
