Plot

In the languid summer shadow of the Second World War, nestled on the tranquil Yugoslavian riverfront, we find Andrija - a congenial lifeguard more acquainted with laughter than the perils of his job. His existence, seemingly untouched by the war, revolves around the river's gentle ebb and flow, a symbol of life's gifts rather than its cruel takings. However, the winds of change begin to stir when Andrija finds himself as the unexpected guardian of two refugees - the spirited widow Ana and her young son, Danny. The duo are fugitives from the horrors of the German occupation, their lives hanging precariously in the balance. Urged by his friend Martin, Andrija embarks on an audacious plan to marry Ana, a sacrificial move designed to shield her and Danny from the ruthless clutches of the enemy. But the river, a silent spectator until now, ripples with a growing unease. A restless water devil, dwelling in the enchanted waters near Martin's house, begins to stir, foretelling an approaching storm. Amidst this turbulent backdrop, Andrija experiences an exhilarating turning point - his first rescue from the river. But the joy of this moment is clouded by a haunting question: Whose life has he truly saved? "That Summer of White Roses" is a poignant tale of courage, sacrifice, and the relentless tug of war between the serenity of nature and the turmoil of war. As Andrija navigates these diverging currents, prepare to be swept away by a story that will leave you questioning the true cost of salvation.
