In the bustling heart of Bombay circa 1971, Gustad Noble, an ordinary banker, weaves his way through the cacophony of city life. His daily commute from Byculla to the Central Bank of India takes him by railway and foot, past the iconic Victoria Terminus and Flora Fountain. His one-bedroom apartment is a haven amidst filth and chaos, housing his wife, Dilnavaz, and their three children; Sohrab, an unwilling recruit of the Indian Institute of Technology, Darius, their middle son, and Roshan, their school-going daughter. In an attempt to purify the polluted vicinity of their home, Gustad invites a pavement artist to create divine representations of Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, and Sikhism on the surrounding walls. This humble act transforms their neighborhood into a sacred sanctuary attracting devotees from all faiths, creating a tapestry of tranquility in an otherwise chaotic life. However, beneath the surface of simple existence, Gustad harbors a thrilling secret. He is entangled with Major Jimmy Billimoria, a rogue agent from the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), who is aiding the Awami League, an extremist group in East Pakistan. Gustad is tasked with depositing a staggering sum of 10 lakh rupees in small installments into his bank. This covert operation unfolds amidst heightened tensions, as war looms between India and Pakistan, and the city is shrouded in fear and darkness due to emergency blackouts and air raid sirens. As Gustad navigates this treacherous path, the question that lingers is: what will become of him when his secret involvement with the rebel forces inevitably comes to light?
