Plot
In the aftermath of World War II, Dave Hirsch, a disillusioned veteran with a penchant for alcohol and a past life as a writer, finds himself pulled back to his sleepy hometown of Parkman, Indiana. His return from the bustling city of Chicago is shadowed by Ginnie Moorehead, a brash and infatuated woman with whom he shared his last Chicago night. Hirsch, however, is haunted by a lingering resentment towards his older brother, Frank, the affluent owner of a local jewelry store and a man of repute who once abandoned him to a home after their parents' tragic demise.
The tension thickens when Frank introduces Dave to his family over dinner, including his disdainful sister-in-law, Agnes, who harbors a deep-seated grudge against Dave for unflatteringly immortalizing her in his novel, and his impressionable niece, Dawn. In the midst of this strained reunion, Dave's eyes meet those of Gwen French, a radiant schoolteacher and daughter of his erstwhile professor. An ardent admirer of his literary prowess, Gwen's presence stirs within him a fervent yet unrequited attraction.
As Dave grapples with this unfulfilled longing, he is drawn back to the comforting familiarity of the local bar where he strikes up a friendship with Bama Dillert, a charismatic gambler. In the dimly lit corners of this refuge, he crosses paths with Ginnie once more, who is now pursued by Raymond Lanchak, a menacing mobster from Chicago and her former lover. As the small-town life inches closer to his guarded heart, the entangled web of affections and resentments culminates in a tragic crescendo, forever echoing through the tranquil streets of Parkman.
