Plot

Rising to prominence as a gay private detective due to a standout feature in the Advocate, Albany-based Donald Strachey finds his latest case in Paul Hale, a frightened young man. Seemingly in a rush, Paul hands over a $5,000 retainer for Donald to locate an unnamed "someone." However, before any more details can be divulged, Paul vanishes into thin air. Tragically, he's soon discovered dead, and while officials label it a suicide, whispers of murder echo in the undercurrent. Driven by a desire to unearth the truth and bring justice to Paul, Donald teams up with Phyllis Hale, Paul's mother. Despite her known homophobic views, she shares Donald's suspicion that her son's death was no suicide. The trail of breadcrumbs leads them to the Phoenix Foundation, a controversial institution run by Dr. Trevor Cornell and his wife, Lynn, aiming to 'repair' homosexuality and convert its patients. As Donald delves deeper, he realizes that Paul was more than just a patient at the Foundation - he was their poster child. Convinced that the key to the mystery lies within the Foundation's walls, Donald courageously goes undercover as a patient, risking everything to expose the killer. As he navigates this complex case, he finds himself confronting his own painful past, opening up to his partner Tim Callaghan about his struggles with his gay identity. "Shock to the System" is a captivating journey of one man's quest for truth, justice, and self-discovery, set against the backdrop of a society grappling with acceptance and understanding.
