Plot

In the glitz and glamour of Beverly Hills, George Roundy, a charming hairdresser in his thirties, has carved out a peculiar reputation for himself. A master of his craft, he spends as much time in the arms of his female clientele as he does styling their hair. The women in his life, though aware of his philandering ways, find themselves ensnared in his allure, some, like the affluent married woman, Felicia Karpf, needing him more than they care to confess. Among George's complex web of relationships is Jill, a rising actress and his current girlfriend. Their lives are intertwined with Jackie Shawn, a former love of George's who broke things off due to his commitment issues. Jackie, to complicate matters further, is presently entangled with Felicia's wealthy husband, Lester. George's life is far from perfect. His dissatisfaction grows due to the constant clashes with his salon's owner, Norman. Yearning for a sense of maturity and independence, he dreams of opening his own salon but is constrained by a lack of funds. A glimmer of hope appears when Felicia convinces Lester to consider investing in George's dream. On the eve of the 1968 presidential election, this intricately connected group gathers for an evening of social mingling, beginning with a dinner party hosted by Lester. Oblivious to the shared history between George and his mistress Jackie, Lester requests George to accompany her. Jill, invited by Jackie, brings along Johnny Pope, a director who is not only considering her for a role in his next movie but possibly more. Throughout this eventful night, George finds himself on the brink of a life-altering realization about his personal and professional desires. But his pursuit of happiness relies heavily on those around him, individuals who've only known George as a self-absorbed womanizer. Shampoo (1975) is a wickedly amusing social satire that delves into the lives of the Beverly Hills elite. Warren Beatty brilliantly mocks his real-life image as a womanizer, against the backdrop of the 1968 Presidential election, in a narrative that revolves around superficial appearances and the relentless question of who is "doing" whom.
