Seize the Day (1986)

In the throbbing heart of New York, Tommy Wilhelm, a once successful salesman, finds himself caught in a tempest of personal crises. After a heated dispute with his boss, who favours his son-in-law over him, Tommy loses his job, triggering a downward spiral that threatens to consume his life. Stripped of his income and stability, he reaches out to his affluent father, Dr. Adler, who resides in a prestigious hotel for the elderly elite. However, Adler, a staunch believer in tough love, views his son as nothing but a disappointment, a parasite feeding on his success. In his desperate search for solace and support, Tommy turns to his girlfriend Olive, but her moral comfort does little to alleviate his mounting financial woes. With an ex-wife, Margaret, and two children to provide for, Tommy's desperation intensifies. Repeated failures in securing employment puncture his morale, leaving him envious of the seemingly prosperous elderly residents of his father's hotel. In a bold attempt to restore his dignity and financial stability, Tommy adopts the family's esteemed last name to rent a room at the hotel on credit. Among the eccentric inhabitants, he encounters Dr. Tamkin, a controversial figure claiming to be a psychiatrist, who sustains himself through questionable treatments and dubious get-rich-quick schemes. Inspired by Tamkin's mantra of seizing the day, Tommy places his trust in this enigmatic stranger, investing his dwindling savings in the stock market. As he navigates the tumultuous currents of his life, Tommy must confront the harsh realities of his past, the misunderstandings with his father, and the precariousness of his present existence. All the while, he battles to retain his sanity in a world that seems determined to break him.
