Plot

In the heart of Sweden, the Alberti Circus trundles along, a ragtag spectacle of fading glory helmed by the gruff and worn-out Albert Johansson. Albert's heart beats for the circus life, a pulse so strong it urged him to abandon his wife, Agda, and their two young sons, choosing his carny existence over a conventional family life. However, the circus is far from a goldmine, and Albert finds himself drowning in the struggles of keeping his beloved circus afloat and maintaining his motley crew. Albert's life takes an unexpected spin when his circus rolls into the town where Agda and his now teenage sons reside, a family he hasn't laid eyes on in three years. Despite his current wife, Anne, the circus's bareback rider, fearing that he intends to desert her and the circus to reunite with his past, Albert is set on visiting them. Anne's fear of abandonment drives her into the arms of the traveling theatre troupe led by Sjuberg, from whom Albert has borrowed costumes. Simultaneously, a tragic tale unfolds within the circus about the clown Frost, whose wife Alma caught him in an intimate moment with a regiment seven years ago, casting a sorrowful shadow over the festive atmosphere. As Albert and Anne navigate the town, they are met with the cruel mockery of the local troupe's director, Mr. Sjuberg. His lead actor, Frans, however, fails to resist Anne's allure, leading them into a fleeting love affair, initiated by a seemingly precious necklace. The necklace proves worthless, pulling Anne back to the circus, while Albert's attempt to reconnect with Agda falls flat. Amidst the chaos, he spots Anne exiting the theatre and heading to a jeweler. The subsequent circus performance turns into an agonizing spectacle as Albert and Anne are subjected to humiliations by Frans, bringing their deeply buried emotions to surface under the harsh spotlights of the circus ring. The intertwining narratives of love, betrayal, and the relentless pursuit of a dream weave the complex tapestry of 'Sawdust and Tinsel', presenting a raw and captivating tableau of life in a struggling circus.
