Plot
Antonius Block is a knight returning home from the Crusades alongside his squire Jons. Both are tired and shaken by the moral and physical ordeals they've had to undergo. They aren't alone either, as an obsession with the apocalypse seems to be prevalent through every small village they pass. But the anxieties are given literal form when Antonious is challenged by the Grim Reaper to a game of chess. While Antonius has given up his belief in God, he hasn't given up his will to live entirely. As the plague ravages the world around him, he plays an intellectual game with death itself.
