Craig Schwartz is a struggling puppeteer who gets a job as a file clerk at a strange Manhattan company that occupies only half a floor. There, he discovers a secret door that leads into the mind of the actor John Malkovich but only for 15 minutes. Afterwards, the traveler is dropped off somewhere on the New Jersey turnpike. Craig's coworker is determined to make money off his discovery, and Craig, his wife Lotte and others, including Malkovich himself, delve into increasingly weird and disturbing questions about identity.
