On a fateful journey to California, Jack McBradden's life takes an unexpected detour in the quaint New England town of Salem Falls due to a car accident induced by Roy Peabody's drunken antics. As a means to apologize, Roy and his daughter Addie, who run the local diner, offer Jack a place to stay and work until his car is fixed. Still grappling with the sudden loss of her teenage daughter Chloe, Addie finds solace in Jack's presence, leading to an unexpected bond blossoming between them.
