Plot

In the bustling city of New York, vivacious and streetwise vaudeville performer Maisie Ravier steps away from her job as a taxi dancer, convinced it threatens her wellbeing. She hears about a dancing opportunity at the Shady Lawn Hotel nestled in the serene Adirondacks and embarks on a journey towards Cedar Lake. On this less than smooth voyage, she stumbles upon Terry Dolan, a promising boxer bearing the stage name Young O'Hara, and his staunch manager, Skeets Maguire. Despite being engaged to the self-absorbed Cissy Reardon, Terry, brimming with kindness like Maisie, extends his support to her. However, Skeets is wary of Maisie's presence, viewing her as a potential distraction and trouble for Terry. His sole focus rests on steering Terry to the championship bout, four matches away – a goal they've been driving towards for four laborious years, their bond growing brotherly strong. Maisie's dancing gig falls through, and she finds herself entwined with Terry, Skeets, Cissy, and Terry’s wheelchair-bound mother, kept in the dark about her son's boxing career. Over time, Skeets' apprehension towards Maisie morphs into an unexpected affection. As the championship draws nearer, Terry unveils his four-year secret to Maisie - his deep-seated fear and loathing for boxing. Her advice in response threatens to shatter the delicate balance of relationships. Inspired by Maisie, Terry musters the courage to bare his fears to Skeets, a revelation that evokes an unforeseen response, compelling Terry to step back into the ring. Ringside Maisie unfurls as a tale of dreams, fears, and the power of relationships, with the championship bout looming ominously over all their lives.
