Plot

In the throes of 1944, the war-touched town of Gregory, Texas, bears witness to the arrival of Nita Longley, a resilient divorcee appointed as the town's tireless switchboard operator. Housed within the stark walls of the telephone-switchboard office, Nita and her two sons, the budding adolescent Harry and the innocent infant Henry, navigate life under the harsh scrutiny of the small-town populace. Her status as a divorcee shrouds her in an undeserved stigma, painting her as a pariah in the eyes of many, particularly the men who view her with a mixture of contempt and unwarranted desire. This humdrum existence is disrupted by the unexpected arrival of Teddy Roebuck, a sailor hitchhiking on a fleeting four-day furlough. When his initial purpose for returning home to Ardmore, Oklahoma, evaporates into the ether, Teddy finds himself drawn to the small town and its scorned telephone operator. As he befriends Nita and her boys, a tender romance blossoms amidst the whispers of the gossiping town, inciting the ire of locals Calvin and Arnold, whose advances Nita has consistently rebuffed. Meanwhile, an unidentified disfigured man lurks in the shadows of the town, an ominous figure feared by Nita. Yet, this mysterious individual may hold the key to freeing Nita from her shackles, leading her down a path towards a new chapter of life, away from the oppressive confines of the switchboard office and the judgmental gazes of Gregory, Texas. "Raggedy Man" is a stirring exploration of love, societal judgement, and the search for freedom in a world at war.
