Promise (2008)

In the secluded wilderness of northern Arizona, a solitary car threads its way through the mountainous terrain, its headlights slicing through the inky forest darkness. The occupants, Jesse and Selene, are young lovers endeavouring to rekindle their faltering relationship against the backdrop of impending graduation uncertainty. What starts as an intimate escapade quickly spirals into a chilling nightmare when a relentless truck chases them off the main road onto the shadowy path of fright and danger. Just as they anticipate being overtaken, the truck's rooftop blares with red emergency lights, revealing itself as a State Trooper's vehicle. Jesse pulls over, but the trooper's truck races past them, vanishing around a distant bend. As they resume their journey, a horrifying discovery awaits them - the State Trooper's vehicle, immobilised and ambushed by a masked paramilitary party. Jesse's desperate brake application is too late; his car, like the Trooper's, falls victim to strategically planted spike strips. The assailants now turn their attention to the vulnerable couple. Selene is violently extracted from the car and rendered unconscious, while Jesse is chased into the forest's depths. When he eventually circles back, a gruesome scene unfolds: Selene has been abducted, and the State Trooper lies slain and mutilated. Armed with the Trooper's untouched weapon belt and fueled by guilt and desperation for Selene's safety, Jesse plunges into the forest's labyrinth. Awaiting him is a brutal confrontation with the enigmatic cult responsible for the night's atrocities, who now hold Selene captive. In the lair of the cult's depraved leader, she clings to Jesse's promises and her unwavering faith in his return. Simultaneously, Jesse grapples with his past and present, his memories of their relationship pushing him to the brink of his humanity. He must navigate this treacherous journey to reunite with Selene, even if it demands the ultimate sacrifice. As the night unfolds, the promise he made to Selene becomes his only beacon in this nightmare, a testament to his undying love for her.
