Plot

In the shadowy underbelly of the international drug trade, Wong Dai, the formidable kingpin of a Chinese drug cartel, presides over a grand merger with a motley crew of major Chinese drug dealers. From the opulent halls of Paris to the bustling streets of New York's Chinatown, from the icy realms of Sofia, Bulgaria, to the pulsating heart of Shanghai, China, this unholy alliance spans continents, their operations concealed behind a façade of laundromats, mahjong gambling dens, and French restaurants. In the midst of this murky world, steps in Robert Burns, a Yale University archaeology professor and recent recipient of the distinguished Winthrop Award. His expedition near the China/Kazakhstan border, envisioned as an exploration of ancient relics, unwittingly uncovers Wong Dai's covert drug smuggling operation. A deadly chase ensues, resulting in the tragic death of his assistant, Luo Yi, and Burns' wrongful imprisonment in a Chinese prison on drug-smuggling charges. Simultaneously, a beautiful Chinese narcotics officer, Tommie Ling, and a gruff DEA agent, Ed Gray, weave their own plans to use Burns as bait to ensnare the drug lords. Burns, however, has other plans. He vows revenge for Luo Yi's murder and soon finds himself on a collision course with Wong Dai's deadly assassins, who strike a fatal blow by murdering his wife, Maya, in their New Haven home. Unbeknownst to his pursuers, behind Burns' academic veneer lies a past steeped in intrigue. He was once a master thief of Chinese artifacts, a past he thought he'd left behind after serving time and changing his name. Now, armed with his formidable martial arts skills, he embarks on a relentless quest for vengeance that takes him through the heart of Chinatown and across Europe. As Burns deciphers the coded tattoos of the Tong members, he unravels a trail leading straight to Wong Dai. An unexpected revelation awaits him; Wong Dai has been orchestrating events, using Burns to eliminate his own Tong members to consolidate his empire of crime. Now, Burns must confront the puppet master himself, navigating a labyrinth of corruption and betrayal, in a final showdown that promises to be as explosive as it is cathartic.
