In the heart of a modest town, Dr. Eli Watt, a solitary widower burdened by a sense of professional failure, seeks refuge from his unfulfilled New York ambitions. As he nurses the delicate balance of fatherhood, he raises his son Jimmy alongside Letty, an orphaned infant whose birth brought about her mother's death and spurred her father's resentment towards Watt, ultimately leading him to desert her. Watt's dreams of resuming his research studies persistently collide with the relentless demands of his life: a sweeping epidemic, the pressing needs of his children, and the ceaseless call of his somewhat thankless patients.
