In the hushed solitude of the nearly deserted Northfork orphanage, Father Harlan tenderly attends to the fragile eight-year-old Irwin, suspended in the limbo between dreams and the shadow of death. As the priest narrates the story of Northfork's imminent and enforced evacuation to pave the way for a hydro-electric dam, Irwin's imagination takes an unparalleled flight. Concurrent to this, a team of six men embark on a mission to persuade the town's last standing citizens to abandon their homes. Mirroring this external upheaval, Irwin weaves his own tapestry of characters, preparing himself for an evacuation of a different kind – a personal journey into the unknown.
