In the heartland of China, we meet Tietou, a humble laborer, whose heart aches for his beloved Xiu Xiu, who has seemingly vanished in the maze of Japan. Following her trail, Tietou, a man of grit and determination, embarks on an illicit voyage to Japan. A twist of fate sees him lose his Chinese identity, trapping him in a foreign land, his dreams of returning home shattered. Tietou finds solace amongst his fellow countrymen in the pulsating district of Shinjuku, a realm where hopes are built and shattered. They offer him a hand, guiding him through the labyrinth of underground, illegal work. A run-in with the law draws Tietou into the gloomy underbelly of Shinjuku's sewage system, where he saves the life of Inspector Kitano, forever caught in the murky waters of duty and survival. A series of events spirals Tietou deeper into a world of chaos and power. A violent confrontation with his cousin, Joe, and a Taiwanese gang, leads to a fateful encounter with Yakuza kingpin Toshinari Eguchi. A face from the past reappears - Xiu Xiu, now Yuko, the wife of Eguchi and a mother to their child. Eguchi, indebted to Tietou, offers him a perilous task. The reward - a promise of control over the territory held by the Taiwanese gang. Embracing the mantle of power, Tietou becomes the unlikely leader of the Chinese immigrants. However, his pacifist approach stirs discontent, and he finds his reign threatened, leading to an explosive showdown that engulfs Shinjuku.
