Nobody's Fool (1994)

In the quiet, upstate town of Bath, New York, we encounter Donald "Sully" Sullivan (Paul Newman), a seasoned, rough-edged construction worker, estranged from family ties and haunted by a past of missed opportunities. Sully, a regular at the local betting house and poker table, is a man whose life is riddled with unpredictability and an eclectic mix of friends and foes who often question his sanity. Living as a tenant in the house of an elderly former schoolteacher, the endearing Mrs. Beryl Peoples (Jessica Tandy), Sully has become her steadfast protector, a role he fulfills with more dedication than he ever did in his own family. His nemesis, the unscrupulous Carl Roebuck (Bruce Willis), inherited Tip Top Construction and flatly refuses to pay worker's compensation for Sully's off-the-books injury, a testament to his lack of integrity that extends to his personal life as well. Amid the web of complex relationships, a spark of mutual affection ignites between Sully and Carl's wife, Toby (Melanie Griffith). Despite Carl's blatant infidelity, Toby finds herself drawn to Sully's rough charm, making her the most beautiful woman in town through Sully's eyes. This unexpected connection becomes one of the many relationships Sully begins to appreciate, as life takes an unexpected turn.
